The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, warned that the pressures exerted by the United States on leaders in Latin America who do not support Washington's policy could generate 'a rebellion' in the region.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, Petro criticized the use of American sanctions as a political tool against leaders with differing views. He was included on a sanctions list by the U.S. Treasury due to allegations related to drug trafficking. Petro compared the current sanctions system to that of Spain's past, emphasizing that such an approach led to rebellions in the past. He also mentioned that the bombing of the Venezuelan capital created an atmosphere of fear among leaders in the region. However, Petro stated that his personal relationship with Donald Trump is good, having had recent discussions to clarify misunderstandings.
