The Bulgarian government has decided to send the army to protect Lukoil facilities in the country, in response to recent sanctions imposed by the USA and to security incidents recorded in other European states. Lukoil is essential for Bulgaria's economy, providing 80% of the country's fuel needs, and its refinery in Burgas is one of the largest in Europe. In the context of a possible sale of Lukoil's business in Romania, Bulgaria has strengthened security measures, including the implementation of an anti-drone system.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and national security agencies have carried out preventive actions, including rigorous inspections at the entrances to facilities. Additionally, the Bulgarian parliament has approved legislative amendments to allow state control over Lukoil's operations, ensuring continuity in the energy sector. These measures come amid heightened vigilance across Europe regarding the security of critical infrastructure.
