Axel Springer, the German media giant known for the tabloid Bild, has announced the acquisition of the Telegraph group, which also includes the Daily Telegraph newspaper, for the sum of £575 million. This surprising move puts an end to the takeover ambitions of rival DMGT, the owner of the Daily Mail. Axel Springer has assured that the editorial independence of the publications will be maintained and expressed the desire to transform the Telegraph into "the most read conservative newspaper in the English-speaking world." The acquisition comes after, in November last year, the current owner of the Telegraph, RedBird IMI, signed an agreement with DMGT, but a British government investigation blocked the sale process on public interest grounds. Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Axel Springer, mentioned the growth potential of the Telegraph group and the need for transformation through artificial intelligence, emphasizing that the group has already begun job cuts in its newspapers due to the impact of technology.
