Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing warns that the recent results of regional elections in Germany, marked by gains for the far right and radical left, could discourage foreign investors and harm the country’s economy. He made the comments in an interview with Bild.
Sewing described the situation as a significant risk to Germany’s appeal as an investment destination. He explained that international investors do not always distinguish between the policies of a regional government and the country’s overall economic direction.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved significant results in elections in the eastern states. The party came close to securing an absolute majority in the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt and subsequently came first in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The AfD supports restricting immigration and repatriating asylum seekers and is considered extremist by security services in certain regions.
In Berlin, the Left Party secured a major victory by promoting radical measures to reduce housing costs, including the expropriation of properties owned by large real estate companies.
Sewing called on the government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz to continue reforms aimed at reviving the economy and increasing competitiveness. He considers reforms the most effective response to the rise of political extremism.
