An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 occurred in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan, on Monday morning at 01:00, according to the US Geological Survey. It is estimated that at least eight people have died and approximately 180 have been injured, and the number of victims could rise as rescue operations continue. Haji Zaid, the spokesperson for the Taliban in Balkh province, reported that many injuries were caused by falls from heights. Residents of the city, which has a population of over 500,000 people, took to the streets out of fear that their homes might collapse. The earthquake also affected the neighboring province of Samangan, where other casualties have been reported. This is the second major earthquake in Afghanistan in recent months, following a 6.0 magnitude quake that killed over 1,000 people in August. Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes due to its position on multiple tectonic fault lines.
