Angela Lipps, aged over 50, was arrested in Tennessee and extradited to Fargo, North Dakota, due to an error by facial recognition software, which incorrectly identified her as a suspect in a bank fraud case. Despite never having been in North Dakota, Lipps spent nearly six months in jail, during which she lost her home, car, and dog due to her inability to pay bills.
Authorities closed the case after bank statements proved that Lipps was in Tennessee at the time the crimes were committed. Although the charges were dropped, Lipps remained stranded in Fargo in the middle of winter, without appropriate clothing. She stated that she would never set foot in North Dakota again and emphasized the devastating impact of the error on her life. Her arrest is an example of the risks associated with facial recognition technologies, which can have serious consequences.
