On Thursday evening, five drones flew over the military base on the island of Longue, located in the Finistère department, France, which houses the nuclear submarines of the French deterrent force. The incident was detected around 7:30 PM, and the authorities activated a drone combat system. The marine infantry battalion, responsible for the security of the base, opened fire to neutralize the drones. Although drone flights in this restricted area are not unusual, the incident raised questions, considering that another flight over the Crozon peninsula was reported on November 17-18, without affecting the military area.
The base, protected by 120 maritime gendarmes and marines, ensures the maintenance of French nuclear submarines, with one of them always at sea for nuclear deterrence. Recently, drone overflights in Northern Europe have increased, and the leaders of these countries suspect Moscow's involvement.
