The 8.8-magnitude earthquake on July 29 activated seven volcanoes in Kamchatka, an unprecedented event in nearly 300 years. Institute of Volcanology director Aleksei Ozerov described the eruptions as a "parade of volcanic eruptions". The quake shifted the southern part of the peninsula by almost 2 meters, similar to what happened in Japan in 2011. Volcanic activity is common in the area, with 29 active volcanoes, and recent eruptions have led to the evacuation of nearby personnel.
