The Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan was shaken by an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The epicenter was located in the city of Uki, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Following the earthquake, JMA issued a tsunami warning for a wave of one meter.

The Japanese government activated emergency warnings for the prefectures of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki, all located on the island of Kyushu. Japan, known for its intense seismic activity, is located on the 'Ring of Fire', where approximately 20% of the world's earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or greater occur.

Kyushu Electric Power reported that the Sendai and Genkai nuclear power plants were not damaged, and the railway operator JR Kyushu suspended services, including Shinkansen trains, as a precautionary measure.
