On Wednesday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1, according to the Taiwan Meteorological Agency, and 6.0, according to the USGS, shook the southeast of Taiwan. The quake occurred at 5:47 PM local time (11:47 AM Romania time) at a depth of 11.9 kilometers, in Taitung County. Although it was felt as far as the capital Taipei, where buildings shook, the Taiwanese fire department reported no damage or casualties. Images broadcast by local television showed products falling in supermarkets in Taitung. Taiwan, located on the junction of two tectonic plates, is frequently affected by earthquakes, with the most recent major quake occurring in April 2024, causing 17 deaths.
