Twenty-two Buddhist monks were arrested at Colombo airport, Sri Lanka, after customs authorities discovered 110 kilograms of cannabis hidden in their luggage. Each monk had approximately 5 kilograms of Kush, a potent form of drug, concealed in compartments with 'false bottoms'.

The monks, mostly students, were returning from a four-day vacation in Thailand, with expenses covered by an unidentified sponsor. A 23rd monk, suspected of organizing the trip, was arrested later. The police spokesperson mentioned that he had told his colleagues that the packages represented a 'donation'.

Photos from the vacation were found on the monks' mobile phones, and the police suspect that some of them were unaware of the contents of the luggage.

This is considered the first case of arresting a group of monks for drug trafficking in Sri Lanka.
