An international study conducted in 11 countries showed promising results for an experimental injection called amivantamab, which completely eliminated tumors in patients with advanced cancer who no longer responded to chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Doctors described these results as "unprecedented," with tumors disappearing in just a few weeks in 15 out of 102 patients.
The treatment works by blocking receptors that promote tumor growth and stimulating the immune system. Amivantamab is administered subcutaneously, making it more comfortable for patients. One of the patients, Carl Walsh, reported a significant improvement in his health status and quality of life after treatment.
The study included patients with head and neck cancer, a type of cancer that is more difficult to treat, and the results suggest significant potential for the development of new therapeutic options. The median survival of patients was 12.5 months, which is considered a significant advancement in the treatment of these forms of cancer.
