Moderna and Merck have announced promising results for an experimental cancer vaccine aimed at patients with melanoma. The phase 3 study included over 1,100 patients with advanced-stage melanoma who were treated with a personalized vaccine, intismeran autogene, along with the immunotherapy Keytruda.
Preliminary results suggest that this combination significantly prolonged the period without disease recurrence and reduced the risk of metastases. Unlike traditional vaccines, intismeran is personalized for each patient, based on the analysis of their tumor. Although the results are promising, the study is not yet complete, and the companies continue to monitor patients to assess overall survival. Moderna's shares rose significantly in response to the announcement, highlighting the high expectations related to messenger RNA technology in oncology. The vaccine is also being tested for other types of cancer, which could open new opportunities in cancer treatments.
