Elections in Russia, monitored with NewsVibe

With the elections for Russia’s State Duma (18–20 September) in full swing, it is useful to look beyond the front-page headlines to understand exactly how discourse is constructed in the Russian information space in a pre-election context.

When analyzing large volumes of media data, it is not only what is being said that matters, but also the architecture of the narratives. We extracted an analysis through NewsVibe of the ecosystem of keywords related to the elections in Russia, and the data help us see the bigger picture much more clearly than a simple review of the news.

Here are 3 quick data-based conclusions:

1. Constant negative sentiment and polarization The tone analysis of recent volumes (visible in the charts) shows that the discourse is not dominated by electoral enthusiasm. Only 13% of the content has a positive tone, while 38% is marked by negative sentiment and a high emotional charge. The sentiment dynamics chart for the last 185 days shows a consistent discourse focused on threat and defensiveness.

2. Domestic elections, external enemies The network analysis reveals an interesting phenomenon: although we are talking about a domestic political event, the central cluster (Russia/Putin/Duma) is deeply interconnected with external entities. The elections are widely used as a pretext to attack Ukraine and highlight divisions in the West. For example, Maria Zakharova is the entity with the sharpest increase in trending (+10.6%), amid statements accusing Kyiv of trying to sabotage the Russian diaspora’s vote.

3. Dual legitimization: “Transparency” and the occupied territories The ranking of topics shows a clear effort to legitimize the process. On the one hand, the head of the Electoral Commission is heavily promoting the narrative of “the most transparent system in the world,” intended to prevent external interference (an allusion to the “color revolutions”). On the other hand, a major media priority is communicating the success of the “early voting” in the occupied territories (Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia), as an instrument for validating control.

Monitoring tools provide us with the “helicopter view” necessary to decipher strategic communication campaigns. We are not witnessing a classic electoral campaign based on candidates, but rather an exercise in consolidating power and projecting clear geopolitical messages.
