The European Parliament adopted on Tuesday a law that prohibits the use of the term "vegetable steak" for vegetarian products, in an attempt to protect animal farmers.
This regulation, which has been heavily debated, still allows the use of the terms "sausage" and "burgers" for plant-based alternatives. The compromise was reached following discussions between MEPs and member states, considering the growing popularity of plant-based products, especially in Germany.
Right-wing politicians argued that names like "steak" affect the recognition of meat products. The law defines meat as exclusively "the edible parts of animals," excluding lab-grown products.
French MEP Céline Imart stated that this is a victory for meat producers. The controversy continues, and the regulation will be enforced until the end of next year, in the context of negotiations for organizing agricultural markets in the EU.
The rapid growth of vegetarian products is driven by consumers' desire to eat healthier and reduce environmental impact.
