Jamaica is facing a major crisis after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which caused significant damage, initially estimated at 30% of the country's GDP. Almost five million tons of debris block roads and access to essential services, and international officials warn that these estimates could rise. Melissa is considered 'the worst climate disaster in the country's history,' according to a representative of the UN agency in Jamaica. The damages have affected homes, businesses, farms, and infrastructure, and satellite data analysis shows that the hurricane generated enough debris to fill 480,000 trucks. A week after the storm, the death toll reached 32 in Jamaica and 76 in the entire Caribbean region.
