A strong earthquake of 7.4 magnitude struck Colombia on August 10, causing severe damage and resulting in over 300 deaths.

President Abelardo de la Espriella announced that preliminary damages amount to 9.57 billion dollars, particularly affecting the cities on the Pacific coast and the coffee-producing region. In the aftermath of the earthquake, thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals collapsed, and the updated toll indicates 304 dead, over 4,500 injured, and 426 missing. Colombia has received international aid, including from the United States and the European Union.

The president has requested a temporary suspension of U.S. tariffs on Colombian products, in the context of their recent increase. His government, sworn in just three days before the earthquake, is facing major challenges in managing the crisis. The Minister of Housing has been tasked with a reconstruction plan but has been criticized for his behavior during the crisis.
