Member states of the European Union approved on Monday, June 22, the proposal of the European Commission to mobilize over 56 million euros from the agricultural crisis reserve. Romania will benefit from 14.8 million euros, while other countries, such as Portugal and Cyprus, will receive significant amounts to support farmers affected by natural disasters.
The non-reimbursable funds are intended for producers of fruits, nuts, grapes, olives, and arable crops. The aid can be supplemented by national governments by up to 200% of their own funds.
The year 2025 brought major economic losses due to drought in Romania and floods in Portugal. The eligible sectors for aid include sunflower and corn in Romania, arable crops in Portugal, and citrus fruits in Cyprus. National authorities must ensure the rapid distribution of funds, with a deadline until February 28, 2027.
The European Commission will officially adopt the measure, and member states will need to send technical details regarding the implementation of the aid.
