Ionuț Dumitru, honorary advisor to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, stated that Romania continues to face the risk of being downgraded to the "junk" category by rating agencies, despite recent fiscal measures.
Although the Fitch agency decided to maintain Romania's rating, Ionuț Dumitru emphasizes that the rising public debt and high budget deficits represent significant threats. He mentioned that, although the deficit has been reduced, it remains at a high level, and to stabilize public debt, a further reduction of the deficit by at least 1.5% of GDP is necessary.
The economist insisted on the importance of continuing fiscal reforms and fiscal consolidation, warning that any sign of weakness will be penalized by the markets.
The Fitch agency believes that the disintegration of the governing coalition in Romania has amplified political and governance risks, in the context of uncertainties regarding the formation and stability of a new government, amid disputes between former coalition partners.
