In the first half of 2023, Romania imported 5.7 TWh of electricity, 54% more than in the same period last year. This is due to a 10% reduction in domestic production, mainly from hydropower, which fell by 25%. Electricity consumption fell slightly and exports fell by 11%. Thermal power generation has increased, dethroning hydro, and the generation mix is dominated by thermal sources. On July 1, 2025, installed capacity in the national power system was 19,246 MW, with a recent increase of 927 MW.
