Rheinmetall, one of the largest European defense manufacturers, has reconfirmed that it is analyzing Romania for the expansion of its naval division, following the acquisition of NVL – Naval Vessels Lürssen. CEO Armin Papperger stated that the Romanian Government has requested the company's assistance in the context of discussions about the Mangalia Shipyard, which is in bankruptcy. Rheinmetall aims for a stronger integration into the military naval sector and has identified Romania as an opportunity for internationalization. Papperger mentioned that several countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia, wish to collaborate with Rheinmetall for shipbuilding. Although the group is not interested in a complete takeover of the shipyard, it seeks to utilize part of the capacity for military naval activities. Rheinmetall aims to increase its naval business to 5 billion euros by 2030, through vertical integration of production. These discussions are relevant for Romania, which is strengthening its defense capabilities and industrial infrastructure. So far, there is no signed agreement, only ongoing negotiations.
