The PSD's decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan comes in a critical context for Romania's finances, generating significant risks, especially regarding European funds.
This political crisis, although not the first, is considered to be the most poorly synchronized, occurring at a time when Romania is in the final phase of implementing the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with a deadline of August 31, 2026. Additionally, Romania must commit funds through European security mechanisms, including SAFE, with a deadline of May 31, 2026. Both initiatives depend on governmental stability and administrative capacity, elements that are affected by the current political conflict.
If the situation does not stabilize, Romania risks losing amounts exceeding 20 billion euros.
