The Social Democratic Party (PSD) accused former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on Thursday of leaving behind tens of billions of lei in unpaid obligations, saying Romanians have the right to know what they endured austerity measures for. The PSD claims that the publicly presented deficit does not reflect the real financial situation, as it excludes all of the state’s outstanding obligations and European funds that were allegedly lost or suspended.
In a Facebook post, the Social Democrats stated that the deficit calculated on the basis of payments made does not include unpaid bills under the Anghel Saligny Programme, delayed VAT refunds, or medical leave payments not reimbursed to entrepreneurs. According to the PSD, these obligations amount to tens of billions of lei, while the reform invoked by the former prime minister allegedly existed “only on paper”.
The party also claims that funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan were “attracted only on paper”, as the funds were allegedly suspended by the European Commission following a challenge attributed to Bolojan. The PSD links this situation to the dispute over the application of the law concerning conflicts of interest and accuses its political opponents of concealing some of the deficit data. These statements represent the PSD’s political position.
