Former PNL Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu accuses the PSD of having a “double discourse” on the budget deficit and says the Social Democrats acknowledge the effects of the budget adjustment in the governing program but publicly present it as a failure. She made the statements on Facebook on Sunday, following criticism by PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu of Ilie Bolojan’s government.
Gheorghiu compared the provisions of the governing program with the PSD’s public messages. According to her, the official document states that the budget adjustment “produces results” and indicates a reduction in the cash deficit from 4.51% to 2.89% of GDP after the first eight months of 2026. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats claim that Romania recorded a deficit of 9.2% of GDP in the second quarter and criticize austerity.
The former deputy prime minister says the PSD is comparing indicators calculated using different methods and covering distinct periods. She says that, in the first six months of 2026, the cash deficit fell from 3.64% to 2%, while the ESA deficit declined from 3.6% to 3.4%.
Gheorghiu acknowledges that reducing the deficit came at a cost but considers it necessary. She warns that increasing spending without funding could undo the results achieved and calls on the PSD, which is in government, to take responsibility for its decisions instead of shifting the blame to Bolojan. Sorin Grindeanu previously accused the government of harming the economy and leaving debts of more than 30 billion lei.
