Diesel prices rose on Thursday, September 17, at all major fuel networks in Romania, by between 4 and 14 bani per liter, according to data reviewed by Economedia. The largest increase, of 14 bani per liter, was introduced by Socar.
Petrom, MOL, Rompetrol and OMV raised diesel prices by 9 bani per liter, while Lukoil increased them by 4 bani. Prices range from approximately 10.64 to 10.79 lei per liter, with diesel most expensive at OMV stations. Filling a 50-liter tank costs 2 to 7 lei more, depending on the network.
Gasoline prices remained almost unchanged, below the threshold of 10 lei per liter. Only Lukoil applied a one-ban increase. The cheapest gasoline is sold by Petrom and Socar, at approximately 9.93–9.94 lei per liter, while the other networks are aligned at 9.99 lei.
The diesel price increase comes amid a rise in the price of Brent crude, which reached $110 per barrel, geopolitical tensions and reduced refining capacity availability. Russia and other countries have limited their diesel exports, intensifying pressure on the market.
Romania can cover approximately 60–65% of its diesel needs through domestic production. The three refineries have a combined capacity of 14–15 million tonnes of crude oil annually, while diesel production stands at around 4.5–5 million tonnes. The difference, estimated at 30% of consumption, is covered through imports.
