Carrefour, the French supermarket chain, intends to sell its operations in Romania, and economist Cristian Păun highlighted the reasons for this decision, including the tax burden and restrictive regulations. In a satirical post, Păun compares the situation to an "empty warehouse" and criticizes the anti-corporate rhetoric that demonizes large foreign investors. He warns that Carrefour's departure should not be a reason for joy, but a wake-up call, considering the negative impact on the retail market and consumption.
Carrefour has already begun the withdrawal process, selling a store in Pitești, and company officials mentioned that austerity measures have affected consumer confidence. There are potential buyers, including giants like Walmart and Tesco, as well as investment funds or online retailers.
