Romania recorded the sharpest annual decline in retail sales in the European Union in July 2026, according to data published by Eurostat. Sales fell by 5.7% compared with the same month in 2025, while they increased by 1% across the EU and by 0.6% in the euro area.

Annual declines were also reported in Germany, at 2.5%, Italy, at 1%, and Spain, at 0.7%. In Romania, the decline was driven by lower sales of non-food products, down 6.4%, fuel, down 7%, and food, beverages and tobacco, down 5.4%.

Compared with June 2026, however, sales in Romania increased by 0.8%, while they fell by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the European Union. The monthly increase in Romania was supported by fuel and food sales.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics show that, in the first seven months of the year, turnover in retail trade fell by 5.7% in unadjusted terms and by 5.8% in seasonally adjusted terms. The largest cumulative decline was recorded in non-food products.⁣-assistant to=event_translation code(Json) ડિસ♀♀♀♀ {
