Eurostat: Romania continues to be the EU country with the highest annual inflation rate

Romania recorded the highest annual inflation rate in the European Union in August 2026, at 6.3%, according to data published by Eurostat on Thursday. The figure is measured using the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices and keeps Romania in first place in the ranking of Member States, despite a significant decline compared with the previous month.

Romania’s annual inflation rate fell from 8.2% in July to 6.3% in August, while prices increased by 0.3% compared with the previous month. Romania was followed by Lithuania, at 5.6%, and Cyprus, at 5.2%.

Across the European Union, annual inflation rose from 3% in July to 3.2% in August, compared with 2.4% in the same month of 2025. In the euro area, the indicator increased from 2.9% to 3.2%. The lowest rates were reported in Sweden, Estonia and Czechia.
