The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has announced that the annual inflation rate will exceed previous estimates, reaching a peak of nearly 10% in June 2026, influenced by energy shocks and international conflicts.
BNR Council members emphasized that inflation will remain high during the March-June 2026 period, with a correction expected only in the following quarter. The increase in fuel prices, driven by the war in the Middle East, will have a significant impact on inflation. Additionally, measures to protect the population and businesses are expected to help mitigate inflationary effects.
Despite these challenges, BNR has decided to maintain the monetary policy interest rate at 6.50% to ensure price stability.
The Council members highlighted the importance of using European funds to counterbalance the negative effects of the energy crisis and to support sustainable economic growth.
