Two company administrators have been sent to trial for tax evasion, being accused of creating a sophisticated mechanism to remove over 2.6 million packs of cigarettes from the excise suspension regime. The total damage caused to the state exceeds 36 million lei, an amount that has not been recovered to date. According to the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal, the two coordinated an authorized tax warehouse and delivered cigarettes worth 53.5 million lei to a distributing company, without paying the excise duties.
The investigation revealed a well-organized scheme, in which the cigarettes were moved between warehouses to maintain the suspension regime. The companies involved, although presented as distinct entities, operated from the same building in Bucharest. The defendants used intermediaries without decision-making capacity to hide their identity. Prosecutors have seized the movable and immovable assets of the defendants, including bank accounts, and the case has been sent to the Bucharest Sector 2 Court for trial.
