United States President Donald Trump intends to appoint Jay Clayton, the current director of national intelligence, as chief adviser on artificial intelligence, informally known as the “AI czar,” according to a source familiar with the decision, cited by Reuters on Friday.
Clayton oversees the 18 U.S. intelligence agencies and is the country’s principal official in this field. He is expected to retain his current position while also taking on oversight of the administration’s artificial intelligence policies.
The White House has not confirmed the information. An official told Reuters that any announcement regarding the appointment would be made directly by the president and described previously reported information as “unfounded speculation.”
Last month, Trump announced that he wanted to appoint a new “AI czar” and create a dedicated task force for the field, without providing details about its structure or responsibilities. The decision comes amid warnings from researchers that the uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence could threaten humanity’s existence within the next decade.
It would be the second such appointment in the Trump administration. Investor David Sacks previously held the role before leaving the White House, but he continues to advise the president on AI-related issues. The information was first reported by CBS.
