Former President Traian Băsescu told Digi24 that the poor results obtained by Romanian students in the PISA tests could explain the political success of AUR leader George Simion. Băsescu said that Simion is “a successful politician,” but “without value,” describing him as a “terrace-stand man.”

In the same interview, the former head of state harshly criticized Ilie Bolojan, saying that he thinks more at a local level and is not prepared for the position of prime minister. Băsescu referred to a visit by Bolojan to the Lacul Morii area, where he allegedly compared the developments with those in Oradea. The former president argued that this comparison reflected the limits of Bolojan’s administrative experience.

Băsescu argued that running a city cannot be compared with managing the national economy. In his view, a local tax affects citizens in a specific area, while an income tax can have effects on the entire economy.

The criticism also targeted Sorin Grindeanu, whom Băsescu called “a cheap demagogue.” Băsescu accused him of contributing to the fall of a government without preparing a solution for forming a new one. He argued that Grindeanu had not negotiated sufficiently with the Liberals and coalition partners before the vote on the motion.
