Former President Traian Băsescu estimates that AUR has reached its maximum electoral potential and that the party led by George Simion could begin to decline. He made the statement on Wednesday evening on B1 TV, amid the possibility of snap elections being held.
Băsescu said that AUR could win between 30% and 35% of the vote, but did not rule out the party falling below the 30% threshold. In his view, the party will not continue to grow if pro-European parties manage to govern effectively and restore macroeconomic balances.
The former head of state identified Călin Georgescu’s arrest as the moment of AUR’s greatest momentum and argued that the party will be assessed by voters “at its true weight.”
Băsescu also raised questions about how AUR funds are being spent, citing the sums collected at events organized by George Simion and the money the party receives from the state budget. He suggested that a financial audit could uncover irregularities, without presenting evidence to that effect.
According to an Avangarde poll published on Friday, AUR ranks first in voting intentions for parliamentary elections, ahead of PSD, PNL and USR. Nearly half of respondents believe that all parties are responsible for the current political situation.
