Thousands of Romanians took to the streets of Rome on Sunday to express their support for Călin Georgescu, who is being held in pretrial detention. Participants chanted messages such as “Călin Georgescu is president” and “Justice, not corruption” during a march organized in the Italian capital.
Cristela Georgescu thanked, in a message posted on Facebook, the Romanians who took part in the protest and carried the tricolor flag. She said that she would tell her husband about the demonstration, the support received from Romanians abroad, and the discontent over the cancellation of a vote, for which supporters continue to demand explanations.
In her message, Cristela Georgescu also referred to the Romanians who gather evening after evening in front of the Central Detention Center to support Călin Georgescu, who has been in detention for nearly a month. She described these gestures as expressions of solidarity and of the bond between Romanians in the country and those in the diaspora.
The demonstration in Rome is part of a series of public actions organized by Călin Georgescu’s supporters, both in Romania and abroad.
