The Senate adopted on Wednesday a bill that prohibits the use of electronic cigarettes, refillable containers, tobacco heating devices, and tobacco substitute products in closed public spaces, public transport, and children's playgrounds.

The bill received 40 votes 'for', 22 'against', and 14 abstentions, despite the negative report from the specialized committee. The legislative act amends Law no. 349/2002, aiming for a total ban on smoking in closed collective use spaces, to encourage smokers to reduce or quit tobacco consumption and to protect non-smokers from passive smoking.

Exceptions are made for spaces where persons deprived of liberty are housed. The bill will now be sent to the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decision-making body.
