The Romanian government is collaborating with Mastercard to develop a national digital identity wallet.

The Romanian government will sign a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard to develop a national digital identity wallet, which will be implemented by December. This initiative is part of the efforts to align with the European Union's legislative framework regarding digital identity.

The digital wallet will allow citizens to store and use digital documents issued by authorities, such as university diplomas, health cards, driving licenses, and professional certificates. The solution will simplify access to public and private services, being compatible with other solutions from EU member states. The Romanian state will remain the owner and administrator of the system, and the partnership with Mastercard will not involve costs for the public budget. The agreement will take place over a period of five years, with four main development pillars, each coordinated by designated ministerial officials.
