Member of the European Parliament Virgil Popescu declared on Tuesday that the European Commission will allocate 200 million euros through the InvestEU program for the development of small modular reactors (SMR). He emphasized the importance of the synergy between nuclear energy and renewable energy to ensure the energy independence and security of Europe and Romania. During a meeting with Céline Gauer, the Director-General responsible for energy, Popescu requested clarifications regarding the Commission's support for nuclear energy and the management of risks associated with dependence on renewable technologies from China.
The Commission reaffirmed that member states have the freedom to establish their own energy mix. Popescu also discussed the vulnerabilities of critical equipment imports and highlighted the need to produce more technology in Europe. He mentioned ongoing projects for the construction of reactors 3 and 4 and SMRs, emphasizing the importance of accelerated investments in nuclear energy for Romania's competitiveness.
