SRI claims to have prevented an act of sabotage attributed to a Russian citizen residing in Romania

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) announced that, in cooperation with Romanian institutions and international partners, it prevented an act of sabotage on Romanian territory allegedly involving a Russian citizen residing in the country.
According to SRI, the Russian citizen had been under surveillance since February 2026 as part of an investigation into attempted acts of subversion. He allegedly recorded photo and video footage of communications centers, national military bases used by NATO allies, headquarters of institutions responsible for defense and national security, as well as critical infrastructure facilities.
Investigators say the suspect was instructed by an intermediary to photograph sites of strategic military interest, including Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft located in Romania. The data collected indicate an operating method similar to that used by networks of saboteurs coordinated by entities from the Russian Federation in other European countries and in cases foiled in Romania in 2024 and 2025.
The operation was carried out together with the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the General Directorate of Defense Intelligence, and foreign partner services.
