The Swedish Security Service, Säpo, announced on Monday that it has thwarted a Russian espionage operation aimed at discrediting Sweden, NATO, and the EU. The operation, planned by the SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence service, aimed to influence the Swedish decision-making process.

Säpo specified that one of the individuals involved was working at a foreign diplomatic mission, but did not provide further details. The Deputy Director of Operations, Christoffer Wedelin, emphasized the importance of intervention to protect vital Swedish interests.

This action comes in a context where Sweden has decided to abandon neutrality and join NATO in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Säpo has identified Russia, along with China and Iran, as the main threats to national security.
