The new Sighetu Marmației II international border crossing point will be open to road and pedestrian traffic, including goods and passenger transport, by December 31, 2027, according to a decision adopted by the authorities. Permanent operation is conditional on the completion of the infrastructure, the provision of staff, and the installation of the utilities required for border checks.

The Border Police and the Romanian Customs Authority will provide staff by redistributing existing positions, while the number of positions for CNAIR will be increased. The facilities required for control activities, including those for the Maramureș Directorate for Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety, will be provided free of charge by the Ministry of Transport through CNAIR.

Expenses for staff, equipment, and services will be covered by the institutions involved, within the limits of the approved budgets. From December 31, 2027, the current Sighetu Marmației crossing point will remain open to pedestrian traffic. Road traffic will be permitted only for emergency services and holders of diplomatic or service passports. The inclusion of the new crossing point on the official list will take effect on October 7, 2026, when the amended Romanian-Ukrainian agreement enters into force.
