The new road bridge over the Tisa River, connecting the municipality of Sighetu Marmației with the town of Bila Tserkva in Ukraine, will open to traffic on October 8, 2026. The announcement was made on Friday, October 2, by the president of the Maramureș County Council, Gabriel Zetea, following several postponements and meetings between the Romanian and Ukrainian authorities.
To operationalize the new link, the Customs Authority and the Border Police must have all systems operational and provide the necessary personnel. The opening will take place in the presence of representatives of both states.
The construction, carried out with an investment of more than 50 million euros, is 268 meters long and designed to last at least 100 years. The infrastructure includes a new 1.2-kilometer road, two parallel bridges, one for each direction, two lanes in each direction, sidewalks, a roundabout, and a border crossing point.
The new customs point will have six lanes in each direction, administrative buildings for border police officers and customs officials, as well as four inspection halls. The bridge will operate in parallel with the old structure, which has been heavily used since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and is undergoing repairs.
