CNIR is analyzing seven route options for the Bucharest–Giurgiu Motorway

The National Road Investment Company (CNIR) is analyzing seven route options for the Bucharest–Giurgiu Motorway, the first high-speed road designed at Romania’s border with Bulgaria. The project will connect Bucharest, Giurgiu and the future Giurgiu–Ruse 2 Bridge, as well as link up with Bulgaria’s Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo motorway.

The proposals submitted by the designer provide connections with the A1 Bucharest–Pitești, the A0 Bucharest Ring Motorway and the A2 Sun Motorway, as well as with the future A6 Bucharest–Alexandria motorway. The investment aims to improve transport between the capital and Giurgiu, increase road safety and reduce pollution.

CNIR will assess the options through a multi-criteria analysis that takes into account terrain conditions, traffic, and technical, economic and environmental criteria. The two highest-ranked routes will be analyzed in the next stage.

The design contract is worth 33 million lei and has a duration of 18 months. The designer is an association led by Activ Proiectare Infrastructură.

On the Bulgarian side, the Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo motorway is 132.84 kilometers long. The Ruse–Byala section and the Byala bypass are at various stages of preparation and construction, with completion estimated by the end of 2028. The Byala–Veliko Tarnovo segment is temporarily stalled after the tender was suspended due to irregularities in the evaluation of bids.
