Romania, Bulgaria and Greece are preparing joint applications through the Connecting Europe Facility for the development of the Baltic Sea–Black Sea–Aegean Sea corridor

The transport ministries of Romania, Bulgaria and Greece will submit joint applications under the 2026 call for projects launched through the Connecting Europe Facility. The initiative aims to develop transport infrastructure along the European Baltic Sea–Black Sea–Aegean Sea corridor, with the deadline for submitting projects set for October 6, 2026.

The new element is the inclusion of cross-border projects that could improve road and rail connections between Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. These include extending the section at the end of the Struma motorway to the Kulata border crossing, as well as studies for new road and rail connections.

The Cohesion Package provides for studies on the Mihaylovo–Dimitrovgrad and Lyubimets–Svilengrad–border with Greece railway sections. The Military Mobility Package also includes the electrification of the line between the Bridge over the Danube and Ruse Marshalling Yard.

The projects are backed by a memorandum signed in Brussels in December 2025 and aim to enable faster transport, more resilient supply chains, and infrastructure with both civilian and military uses.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria is building the 132.84-kilometre Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo motorway, which will facilitate Romanians’ travel to Greece and Turkey. The connections are part of the Via Carpatia and TEN-T networks.00slug00:00{{slug}}
