Before Romania’s participation in CIIE, Romania–China economic and connectivity relations were supported by the resumption of direct flights to Beijing, after a pause of more than two decades. The route was inaugurated by Air China for the period beginning on 4 September, with three weekly flights and a duration of approximately 9–10 hours, reducing travel time compared with connecting-flight options, while tickets were announced in the €700–800 range. In parallel, Romanian officials linked the launch of the route to a broader process of intensifying bilateral cooperation, mentioning areas such as agriculture, transport and energy, and indicated that the route could be used to connect passengers and trade flows to other European destinations.
Romania is participating for the first time with two exhibition pavilions at the ninth edition of the China International Import Expo (CIIE), held from November 5 to 10, 2026, in Shanghai. The two stands bring together 15 Romanian companies and receive financial support from the state budget through the Romanian Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade.
The National Pavilion features companies from the wine, cosmetics, chemical industry and fashion design sectors. The Agri-Food Pavilion promotes products from the meat and dairy industries, canned fruit and vegetables, as well as bakery products.
Romania’s Ambassador to China, Dan-Horia Maxim, attended the opening ceremony and discussed access to the Chinese market and trade opportunities with company representatives.
A meeting with representatives of the Republic of Moldova also took place during the exhibition. The two countries are participating simultaneously with national pavilions at CIIE for the first time, in an event presented as an opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation, promote exports and expand their presence in international markets.
