Romania has two bids for the construction of an AI Gigafactory, and the selection process has reached its final stage, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare announced on Friday at the Concordia Summit 2026. The authorities hope to be able to communicate a result by the end of this year.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Finance have been working on this project for nearly a year. The efforts began in the summer of last year, before EuroHPC modified the criteria for the European procedure for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
“At present, Romania has two bids on the table for an AI Gigafactory. We are in the final selection stage,” Alexandru Nazare said. He specified that the national process took place in parallel with the European procedure and that Romania is not behind schedule.
The minister explained that the authorities chose to communicate less information throughout the procedure, with the details to be presented once the result is announced. “I hope that by the end of the year we will be able to finalize things with a positive announcement,” Nazare added.
The statements were made during a discussion about the development of the technology sector and investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The construction of an AI Gigafactory would support the expansion of the computing capacities needed for the development and use of artificial intelligence-based technologies.
