According to the latest Eurostat data, Romania ranks first in the European Union for the number of deaths caused by road accidents, with 93 victims per million inhabitants.
This statistic highlights a serious problem, in the context where the total number of deaths in road accidents has increased in the EU, reaching nearly 20,000 in 2021, compared to 18,834 in 2020, a temporary decrease caused by COVID-19 restrictions. Although there is a general trend of decreasing deaths in road accidents since 2011, countries in Eastern Europe, such as Romania, Bulgaria, and Latvia, continue to record high mortality rates.
The European Union proposes measures to reduce these tragedies, including changing the legal age for obtaining a driving license to 17 years and introducing a two-year probation period for new drivers. The European Transport Safety Council emphasizes the importance of implementing these proposals without diluting them.
