Raluca Turcan, PNL deputy, vehemently criticized the idea of introducing a progressive tax, calling it a "false theory" promoted by politicians without solutions. In a Facebook post, she emphasized that progressive taxation would not solve Romania's economic problems, but would bring the country back to a model that has stagnated development and favored tax evasion. Turcan reminded that Romania had a progressive taxation system until 2005, when a flat tax was introduced, which led to an increase in budget revenues and attracted investors. She argued that the progressive tax led to a flourishing underground economy and undeclared work, which affected employees. Turcan called for a focus on combating tax fraud, which costs Romania tens of billions of lei annually, and emphasized the need to maintain low taxes and structural reforms in public administration, not tax increases. Her statements come in the context of recent debates regarding the progressive tax, supported by part of the political spectrum as a solution for inequalities and increasing budget revenues.
