Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, stated that Romania is a clear example of the success of cohesion policy, emphasizing that GDP per capita has significantly increased since joining the EU. Fitto highlighted the importance of cohesion as an expression of European solidarity, mentioning that it transforms European values into action. In the current context, he explained that cohesion policy needs to be adapted to new challenges, such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
Romania, like other member states, is reviewing its priorities to direct funds towards essential areas. Fitto announced that future programs will focus on flexibility and performance, reserving 218 billion euros for less developed regions.
The European Commission is also preparing new initiatives to support local authorities and communities affected by depopulation. Finally, Fitto called for responsibility in the negotiations for the future multiannual budget of the EU, emphasizing the need for simplification and flexibility to maximize the use of European resources.
