The abbess and monk of the Holy Cross Monastery in Oradea were sanctioned by the Orthodox Diocese of Oradea after receiving Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, with special honors. The incident took place on September 13, and the diocese determined that the actions of the two had violated recommendations to avoid political manifestations within the Church.
During the visit, the monastery’s monk addressed Călin Georgescu as “the elected president.” The former candidate had arrived at the monastery after a meeting with his supporters, organized in Oradea’s Piața 100, which was attended by thousands of people from several regions of the country.
As a result of the episode, the abbess and monk received a written episcopal reprimand with a warning. The sanction represents an official censure and may be followed by more severe measures if similar situations are repeated.
The diocese also imposed restrictions on the two regarding travel and the performance of religious services. The decision comes as representatives of the Orthodox Church recommend avoiding the association of religious activities with political actions or messages.
