President Nicușor Dan stated on Wednesday, in Prague, that Romanian politicians must take citizens’ wishes into account and reach an agreement to end the political crisis. The statement was made during a joint press conference with his Czech counterpart, Petr Pavel, during the official visit to the Czech Republic.
The head of state specified that he had discussed the domestic political situation with the Czech president, but that external partners are not concerned that Romania will change its pro-Western direction. Nicușor Dan conveyed that the country’s strategic orientation remains unchanged, despite the tensions and institutional deadlock.
The president pointed out that “an overwhelming majority of Romanians” wants the crisis to end and expressed hope that the public message would prompt political leaders to reach a compromise.
“I believe that politicians must look to the people who gave them their mandate and, when an overwhelming majority of Romanians say that this crisis must end, there is a good chance that politicians will be convinced to reach an agreement that will end this crisis,” Nicușor Dan stated.
The statements come amid difficult negotiations between parliamentary parties to form a stable majority and a government formula capable of ensuring Romania’s political and socioeconomic stability.
